A survey released this week by Merritt Hawkins suggests that an average physician generates $2.4 million annually in hospital revenue. The placement firm interviewed hospital chief financial officers for the survey and asked them “to quantify how much revenue physicians in 18 specialties generated for their hospitals in the previous 12 months.” The total estimated revenue included all charges related to inpatient and outpatient admissions, as well as tests, procedures and prescriptions.
